18 months out? Relax. We got this.

Been a long time, readers.  Hello again.

So you went to a wedding fair and talked with a Mach 1 Music DJ 18 months before your special day.  The DJ was engaging and energetic, confident and knowledgeable.  You decided to book Mach 1 Music. Good for you!  Entertainment and coordination is a HUGE part of your wedding day.

This happened to Mach 1 Music 37 times that day.

You get married once.  Hopefully.  True love and all that.

Mach 1 Music gets married every weekend.  Sometimes multiple times.  Mach 1 Music is pretty good at it by now.  The Mach 1 Music DJ's know what needs to happen to make your event a success.

All Mach 1 Music really needs from you is some information about your wedding party, your family, and your desired songs for the important moments of your wedding day.  Seriously, that's it. Just pay your deposit at booking time (which is the universal indicator that you're serious about the booking) and then provide the information about your wedding approximately 1-2 weeks before your event.

This information (except probably the family stuff) will likely change 37 times in the 18 months between "now" and your wedding day.  Can you imagine processing the ever-changing information for 37 different wedding events for 18 months?  It might make you rethink some life choices.

Trust Mach 1 Music.  You booked us because you got that feeling that we were going to do a great job making your day work.  And we will.  And we're going to do it for the 37 other couples who booked us that day too.

Relax... We got this.

'Do Not Play' list - Revisited

Giving your DJ a list of songs you do not want played at your reception is a common practice.  It informs the DJ as to what YOU, the client, don't want to hear at your reception.

This concept is reasonable.

What is unreasonable is listing songs that you personally are sick of hearing at wedding receptions.

Yeah, I said it.  Your 'Do Not Play' list is very likely unreasonable, and at the very least, disrespectful of your guests.

Do you know why you hear 'those songs' all the time?

Because they're fun.
Because people dance when they're played.
Because more people like these songs than dislike them.

Here is an example of what SHOULD be on a 'Do Not Play' list:
Closer - Nine Inch Nails
She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
99 Problems - Jay-Z
Any 'hardcore' gangsta rap
Basically anything you'd be embarrassed to have your parents and/or your grandparents hear.

Any wedding DJ wouldn't play these anyway.

Which brings me to YOUR 'Do Not Play' list.  If it is excluding all those fun songs you are personally tired of... rethink it.  You are doing a disservice to your guests.

That is all.

They danced in the rain

Recently, Mach 1 had the opportunity to play a reception where most of the dancing was outdoors.

July.  Montana.  Outside.

Of course there was going to be rain!

We set up indoors and outdoors at the venue, because we're good like that.  We were ready to move the show inside, if needed, but we also located a large umbrella to "protect" the DJ equipment.

These guests were so great...  we played, they danced, the rain fell.  It was one of the most unique and fun receptions Mach 1 Music has ever played...  I guarantee this wedding reception will be remembered by everyone involved for quite some time.

They danced all night in the rain!  It was an honor to be a part of it.

Be careful about your "Do Not Play" list

Yeah, you have songs you've heard waaaaaaaaay too many times at events. We've heard them too many times too... There's a reason you've heard them so much. Songs are "classic" for a reason.

They're fun.
EVERYBODY can dance to them.

Please keep in mind that your DJ is there for you AND your guests.

Do you want your guests to remember that your deejay DIDN'T play something they wanted, or that they DID play it and a lot of people had fun?

Just sayin'.

When you make your "Do Not Play" list... think about your guests.

If you must have a "Do Not Play" list... try this...  How much is it worth to you for the song to be played and people to have fun with it?

We'll auction off your Do Not Play songs, and add it to your honeymoon fund.

Later,

Balance

DJ-ing in Montana is an interesting proposition.  Generally events are very... shall we say... "segregated" in the musical tastes.  Mixing country and hip-hop for an occasion is no mean feat.  We do it a lot.

SO... if you're at that gig... and you're not hearing what you want RIGHT THAT INSTANT... be patient.  It WILL come back around.  We gig to serve. Just can't serve it all at the same time.

Welcome to Mach 1 Musings...

a blog by the DJs at Mach 1 Music DJ Entertainment

This will be a forum for observations, and advice about mobile DJ-ing, and in particular, wedding receptions.

Most likely, gonna drop some truth bombs.  Don't worry, you'll survive.  And be better off for it!
